The home we long for may be the physical house or geographical place we grew up in, or a specific time period—such as youth or childhood—and the associated relationships and experiences. However, “nostalgia”, the term we use today to describe this looking to the past, can carry with it a significant load of social and cultural baggage, despite its relative modernity. I seek to confront the pleasures and pitfalls of nostalgia and decide whether to embrace or circumvent them in my work.
